The Ultimate Guide to Creating Your Custom Engagement Ring

Have you been endlessly searching for the perfect engagement ring but always find something is missing? Maybe the center stone simply isn't unique enough or the setting is too simple. Designing a one-of-a-kind ring might be the best option for you! Create a piece that feels undeniably you. A ring that represents the love between you and your partner that will last a lifetime.

This is our ultimate guide to creating your custom ring. Let's turn your ideas into a beautiful heirloom piece!

Step 1: Discover what your jewelry aesthetic is.

This first step is totally unique to you. You should have a general idea of what your style is and what you like before jumping into designing a custom ring. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1. How would you describe your aesthetic?

Are you more artsy and creative or minimal and simplistic? Do you love all things fantasy-related or are you more traditional? Does your style lean more vintage or modern? These are just some examples of what you might need to know about yourself when deciding on a direction for your perfect engagement ring. Each aesthetic has a specific vibe that will be a direct reflection of your personality and style!

2. Where do you feel the most inspired?

Take a moment and think about where you feel happiest. At the beach? The forest? A city? Taking elements about the places where you feel most inspired are a great way to learn more about your personal aesthetic. Someone who feels happiest in the mountains may lean more towards a cool toned, gray diamond while someone who feels most inspired under the stars may gravitate toward a super celestial dark and clear diamond.

3. What's important to your relationship?

An engagement ring is a representation of your unending love between you and your partner. Now is the perfect time to reflect on what is important to your relationship and incorporate that into your ring. For example, if your first date was to a garden, you may want to incorporate floral or nature-inspired elements into your ring! Maybe you have a phrase or anniversary date that you'd like to have engraved. Little details like that may make all the difference to you and make your ring feel even more special.

4. Do you feel more drawn to warm tones (brown, red, orange, yellow, etc), cool tones (teal, green, blue, purple, etc) or neutral tones (black, white, gray, etc)?

Deciding what tones you like most is a great way to help guide you when choosing the colors of your ring. If you find yourself leaning towards cool tones, a white gold ring with a teal sapphire might be right up your alley. Alternatively, if you gravitate towards neutral tones, a white gold ring with a gray diamond may be more attractive. This is another opportunity to reflect on where you feel most inspired. If you're drawn to the forest, you might want to explore earthy, warm tones. If you're drawn to the ocean maybe explore some cool tones!

5. What season do you resonate with the most?

Each season has such a different feel to it! Thinking about your favorite season may help you when trying to figure out what your jewelry aesthetic is. If you love Autumn and all the changing leaves, you may love a beautiful champagne diamond or warm orange sapphire. If your favorite time of year is in the Spring when you can watch all the trees blossom, a light-colored sapphire and some leafy or floral elements might be just what you're looking for!

Step 2: Gather all your inspiration.

Look around on our website or online and collect any and all inspiration you can find! You can bring us Pinterest boards, sketches, screenshots, etc. Keep in mind that these do not have to be exactly what you're looking for. You might want to combine a few elements of certain designs or you might just love the look of a particular center stone. All of these inspo pictures will give us a better idea of what you're hoping to create!

We recommend that you take a look at our current selection of unique diamonds and gemstones for custom work. If you see a stone (or a few stones) you love, great! Make a note of them. If you’re not seeing any stones that are speaking to you, don’t worry. We can find the stone of your dreams by stone sourcing!

Step 3: Reach out to us!

Once you have collected all your ideas and gathered all your inspiration, it's time to get started! Reach out to our team of jewelry experts using our custom work inquiry form. We will work with you one-on-one to bring your vision to life.

Our team can help you find the stone of your dreams, and we will create a sketch as well as a digital mockup of your ring to give you an idea of what it could look like! We can make any changes you'd like during this time and come back to you with more mockups until it's in a place where you feel confident to move forward.

Once you have your perfect center stone and unique setting design, we will begin production! Throughout the process you will receive digital renderings for your approval. We can also send resin versions of the setting so you can see the proportions in person. Once you're happy with the design, your ring will be cast, set and then sent your way when complete!

Everyone's journey to finding their perfect engagement ring is different. What works for one person may not work for you and vice versa. If you've been feeling discouraged with the options at other jewelers or don't even know where to start, we are always happy to chat and help you create the ring of your dreams!
